West News Wire: Iga Swiatek, the defending champion and no. 1 in the world, was eliminated from the US Open in the fourth round.

Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia, the 20th seed, defeated Swiatek on Sunday at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York by scores of 3-6, 6-3, and 6-1.

Before playing Ostapenko, the three-time Grand Slam champion from Poland had never lost a set.

On match point, the Latvian blasted a precise forehand winner to break Swiatek’s serve, extending their head-to-head record to 4-0. She celebrated by pumping her fist.

Ostapenko, who triumphed at Roland Garros in 2017, will play sixth-seeded American Coco Gauff, who defeated Caroline Wozniacki earlier in the day in three sets.

Swiatek was also knocked out of Wimbledon early, after losing in the quarter-finals to unseeded Elina Svitolina from Ukraine.
