The Nelson Mandela Foundation issued a statement on Tuesday morning expressing its deepest condolences to the Mandela family on the terrible death of Zoleka Mandela the previous evening. We express our sorrow on the passing of a very loved granddaughter of Mum Winnie and Madiba and a Foundation friend.
Zoleka Mandela, who was born on April 9, 1980, spent her entire life as an outspoken writer and advocate for justice and access to healthcare. Zoleka Mandela, the child of MJ Seakamela and Zindzi Mandela, was a grandchild of Nelson Mandela and Winnie Mandela.
“Her work in raising awareness about cancer prevention and her unwavering commitment to breaking down the stigma surrounding the disease will continue to inspire us all,” the Nelson Mandela Foundation said.
In a statement shared on her Instagram page, Zoleka Mandela described her ongoing battle with cancer.
A statement from family spokesman Zwelabo Mandela said, “On Monday, September 18th, Zoleka Mandela was admitted into hospital for ongoing treatment for metastatic cancer to the hip, liver, lung, pelvis, brain, and spinal cord.” Recent scans showed “significant disease progression, including lung fibrosis and multiple emboli.”
“On Monday, September 25, Zoleka died away in the company of friends and relatives. Sincere appreciation to the medical staff that cared for her, the note said.
The Nelson Mandela Foundation expressed its support for her friends and family at this trying time. Zoleka, we will always remember you.
