West News Wire: Officials reported that a long-serving Catholic bishop who was regarded as a “peacemaker” was shot and died on Saturday in Los Angeles.

In his 45 years of service to the church, Auxiliary Bishop David O’Connell served as a priest before becoming a bishop, according to a statement from Los Angeles Archbishop José H. Gomez.

Gomez claimed he had a reputation for being a “man of great prayer.”

An adult male was found deceased at the scene in the Hacienda Heights area, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The police confirmed to Los Angeles ABC station KABC that O’Connell had been shot and murdered.

“He was a peacemaker with a heart for the poor and the immigrant, and he had a passion for building a community where the sanctity and dignity of every human life was honored and protected,” Gomez said.
